Djeva 114 Cobalt Spinel Rich Blue Facet Rough Lab Created Crystal

These are old stock flame fusion cobalt spinel grown by Djeva when they were still in business, categorized as "114".

This is cobalt spinel, one of the most vividly colored lab created crystals! While it is sometimes found in nature as a very rare and prized gemstone it is never available in large sizes.  While cobalt spinel can be used in lasers as a Q switch this material was grown for use in the gem trade.  This is outside our usual focus but we made an exception for this material.  Cobalt spinel is very sensitive to trace contamination, particularly from iron, and it doesn't take much to remove the 'snap' from the color.  Djeva grew these gems to a high standard of quality, and though they aren't as vivid as the czochralski grown laser material they still have a very rich vivid color.  In comparison contemporary grown is of uneven quality and just not up to the old standards.  So knowing this material is going to be harder and harder to get I just had to have some.
