Giant Soviet Laser(?) Ruby Crystal, Wand or Sword Blade

This is a bizarre crystal of ruby from an old collection of Soviet material.  I am not even sure of the growth method--it is very long and slender, and flattened, which makes me think it may have been grown by floating zone, though some sort of ultra-refined flame fusion could be possible too.  The unusual growth and lower concentration pure chromium doping makes me think it is likely laser ruby, meant to be grown for one long rod.  The base has some opaque layering which might be why it was left as a crystal.  It is absolutely stunning, with a natural handle that makes it nice to hold.  It also glows in sunlight thanks to its vivid fluorescence.  I have always wanted one of these old Soviet crystals and I'll be sad when it eventually goes.

The crystal measure 34cm in length and weighs in at 340g.
